(Gretna, Va.) — A Pittsylvania County rescue worker was in the right place at the right time Tuesday night and rescued a man from his burning truck.
It happened around 8 p.m. as Perneice White was driving home from work on Boxwood Road in the northern end of the county.
She spotted flames coming from a truck alongside the road and called 911. White at first didn’t think anyone was inside the vehicle but soon heard the man’s cries for help and realized he was trapped inside the vehicle.
She didn’t wait for rescue units to arrive. White reached inside the cab of the burning pick-up, grabbed the man’s jacket and dragged him to safety as the vehicle burst into flames.
The man was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital and White is credited with saving his life.
She has worked as a rescue volunteer for 13 years and the Gretna Fire Department and Rescue Squad plans to recognize White for her quick thinking.
