(Wise County, Va.) – A man who pulled a shotgun on a sheriff’s deputy in Big Stone Gap is dead.
It happened at the end of a pursuit in Wise County Monday evening.
The incident began shortly after 6 p.m. when a Wise County sheriff’s deputy spotted a pickup truck driving erratically on Old Route 610. The deputy turned on his emergency lights and tried to stop the pickup truck, but the driver sped away.
According to state police, as the truck entered the southbound entrance ramp to Route 23, the driver stopped in the travel lane and got out of the pickup, armed with a shotgun.
The deputy shot the man, who died at the scene.
The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Wytheville Field Office is investigating the shooting.
