(Danville, Va.) – Danville City Manager Ken Larking is offering a $290.4 million budget, an increase of about $3.4 million from the current fiscal year.

The plan calls for a one-cent hike in the city’s meals tax, which is expected to raise $1.2 million in additional revenue. As proposed, the tax would increase from six to seven percent. Larking said the proposal would add 25 cents to a $25 restaurant bill.

City employees would receive an average two percent pay raise, along with an enhanced retirement benefits plan for public safety employees.

Larking is proposing an additional $445,000 to purchase new security cameras and public safety equipment, fund a crime scene analyst position, and provide a sheriff’s deputy supplement.

The budget also includes a Riverfront Park that is planned for development at Main Street and Memorial Drive.

Larking did not offer an increase the real estate tax, which would remain steady at 80 cents per $100 of assessed value.

City Council must approve a budget by July 1.
