(Danville, Va.) – A hotel that has been a landmark in downtown Danville for a hundred years will soon close its doors.

Russell Lee Davis, Jr. says Hotel Leeland will close April 30. The Davis family has operated the hotel at 621 Main for the past 46 years. Davis and his wife continue to manage the operation, which formerly included a restaurant and Hile’s Gift Shop.

Davis said he was saddened by the decision but added that “the last few years have been rough,” with fewer residents staying at the hotel and operating expenses continuing to rise.

Construction on the century-old, four story building started in 1917 and the Hotel Leeland has been in continuous operation in downtown Danville since 1918. The iconic building was designed by noted architects J. Bryant Heard and Albert G. Pritchett.

Any future plans for the hotel have not been determined.
