(Danville, Va.) — It may soon cost a little more to stay in a hotel in Danville.
As budget preparations continue, city leaders have nixed a cigarette tax in favor of an increase in the lodging tax, plus an occupancy fee.
Danville City Council is looking to raise the hotel tax from 7% to 8%, while adding a $2 per night occupancy rate. These rates would also apply to Airbnb rentals.
City Manager Ken Larking says the increases would raise about $400,000 in additional revenue, money that has been earmarked to help the Danville Lifesaving Crew.
A public hearing on the proposed budget will be held May 21st.
