(Danville, VA) – An inmate inside the Danville City Jail died in his cell in the early hours of Friday morning. According to Sheriff Mike Mondul just after 3AM deputies heard a banging sound coming from inside one of the housing units. Another inmate made officers aware that Jerrod Irv-Low Washington was having some sort of medical emergency. Medical staff were called in to the cell while paramedics were dispatched to the jail. Washington was unresponsive when deputies reached him CPR was started, and were able to resuscitate the inmate, but he crashed again a short time later. Washington was pronounced dead at the SOVAH Critical Care unit.
The body will be sent to the medical examiner’s office in Roanoke for autopsy. Washington who had been jailed since June of 2018 had recently been sentenced to serve 6 years, 7 months, and 20 days for narcotics and forgery charges. Washington was being treated for notable, pre-existing health issues while he was an inmate. The Sheriff’s office alerted both the Danville Police Department and the Virginia Department of Corrections in regards to the incident.
