SAN PEDRO, Beliz — A cardiologist from Roanoke was murdered Sunday while vacationing with his family in Beliz.
San Pedro Police confirm that 53-year-old Dr. Gary Paul Swank and his tour guide, 53-year-old Mario Nestle Jr Graniel, of Beliz, died of multiple gunshot wounds.
Swank was an avid fisherman and his body was found floating face down near a skiff in a lagoon about a mile west of the town of San Pedro. The tour guide’s body was discovered inside the boat. Graniel was a tour guide in the Boca del Rio area of San Pedro.
Police say both men went fly fishing in the town lagoon about 10 a.m. Sunday when a dark colored skiff passed by and opened fire on their boat.
At this point, San Pedro Police have made no arrests in the double homicide.
Swank was vacationing with his wife and three children in Beliz. The cardiologist was the medical director of Carilion Clinic’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab, and an associate professor of internal medicine at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine in Roanoke.
