DANVILLE, Va. — The city of Danville will receive $300,000 in Environmental Protection Agency funds to conduct environmental assesments in the River District and the Schoolfield area. The White Mill, the Long Mill parcels, and Schoolfield sites are a priority for assessments.

Grant funds also will be used to update the White Mill, Schoolfield, and Riverfront Park redevelopment plans, prepare a Long Mill redevelopment concept and conduct community outreach activities.

Martinsville will also receive $300,000 for redevelopment projects for the Uptown Martinsville neighborhood, the Rives Theater, Chief Tassel Building, and Sara Lee Apparel plant.

Danville and Martinsville are among seven Virginia localities designated to get federal funds to help assess and clean up abandoned, polluted commercial properties. The other recipients are: the town of Bluefield; the LENOWISCO planning district in southwest Virginia; the city of Richmond; the town of Vinton; and the city of Williamsburg.

The Environmental Protection Agency announced the $3.3 million in funding Wednesday.

EPA said in a news release that the Virginia communities are among 149 nationwide that will receive funding from the Brownfields grant program.
