(Danville, VA) – Update as of 8:35am.  Danville Police working the crime scene as a murder investigation.  The incident began on the southern portion of Hughes Street near Southhampton Avenue.  A beige SUV collided with a van parked on the curb at the intersection of Reid and Hughes Street.  The shooting victim was the driver of the SUV and he was pronounced dead behind the wheel when first responders arrived.

The victims identity is being withheld pending notification of family.  The body has been transported to the medical examiners office in Roanoke for evaluation.  The Virginia State Police are assisting the Danville Police Department with the investigation.

(Original Report) Danville Police officers were dispatched just after 3:30 Friday morning to reports of multiple shots fired in the area of Hughes Street near Ma Hollins.  Officers blocked the roadway from South Main Street up to Boswell Street as the whole area is considered a crime scene.  Early reports indicate at least one person was shot, but that individuals’ status remains unclear as authorities are still assessing the situation.  Officers believe the shooter was on foot and K9 units were called in to begin tracking.  We will continue to monitor this situation and update as more information becomes available.
