CHATHAM, Va. – The tinder-dry conditions have prompted Pittsylvania County officials to issue a burn ban until further notice. The ban is effective immediately.

Several counties issued bans on open burning this week. Open air burning is considered the burning of any brush, grass, leaves, or other vegetation as well as any other combustibles that are not placed in an approved container. Campfires are also prohibited in the burn ban areas.

According to the Pittsylvania Department of Public Safety, this ban will remain in effect until a significant amount of rainfall decreases the fire risk.
