TAR HEEL, N.C. (WRAL) – A suspect is in custody after two workers at a North Carolina hog processing plant were shot early Thursday morning.
It happened just after midnight just south of Fayetteville in Bladen County.
WRAL quotes Sheriff Jim McVicker, who says deputies responded to an “active shooter incident” at The Smithfield Packing Company, which is located in the town of Tar Heel. McVicker said a man and a woman who worked at the plant were shot by a co-worker in a stairwell. He said the male victim was shot twice in the upper body. The woman was shot once. Both were airlifted to two different hospitals in serious condition.
McVicker said the shooter was dressed in all black and ran from the scene. Deputies and a K-9 responded and found the suspect hiding in some trees behind the plant.
20-year-old Jaquante Williams is charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder.
The plant was placed under lockdown as several law enforcement agencies responded.
