SOUTH BOSTON, Va. — Two people are dead and a suspect is in custody following a shooting outside a vape shop in South Boston Saturday night.
The victims are identified as 20-year-old Davonte Powell (pictured) and a 17-year-old whose name has not been released. Police say Powell died at the scene of the double homicide, which happened near a strip shopping center in the 3600 block of Old Halifax Road. The 17-year-old was taken by helicopter to Duke University Medical Center, where he died a short time later.
Investigators have arrested another 17-year-old in connection with the murders and say it appears the three knew each other.
The suspect surrendered to police several hours after the shootings and is being held at the W.W. Moore detention facility in Danville. His name was not released because of his age. He is charged with two counts of second-degree murder and with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Investigators say the handgun believed to have been used in the murders was found by the roadside not far from the scene of the murders.
No motive has been given.
