BURLINGTON, N.C. (AP) — A man was jailed on Saturday on child abuse, hit-and-run and burglary charges while crashing two vehicles, one of which smashed into a church building, North Carolina authorities said.

Burlington police said Yavier Luisan Jesurum, 30, was arrested following a series of events that began when his Acura crashed into the woods Friday night. He left his 5-year-old son behind and walked away, a police release said.

The suspect then threatened to shoot someone at a McDonald’s before stealing that person’s Toyota SUV, according to police. That vehicle ultimately crashed into Trinity Worship Center, causing about $125,000 in damage to the church.

Police said Jesurum went into the church on foot and left. He later tried to enter a house but was confronted by the owner before police took him into custody.

Jesurum, who is also accused of impaired driving and robbery charges, was in the Alamance County jail under a $100,000 bond. A person answering the phone at the detention center on Saturday had no information about whether Jesurum has an attorney.

The 5-year-old boy was returned to his mother, the release said.
