RICHMOND, Va. – Governor Ralph Northam has sent legislation clearing the way or legal sports betting back to the General Assembly with amendments.

According one of the bill sponsors, Northam is sending the bills back with amendments that are “agreeable to both House and Senate” The amendments include several changes to fees and definitions. It also appears to allow for betting on college sports that take place in the state but do not involve a Virginia team.

The Virginia General Assembly is set to meet for a reconvened session April 22 to consider the amendments.

The bills would allow five casinos to be built in Danville, Bristol, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Richmond, all considered “economically challenged” locations.

The bills call for a voter referendum to approve the casinos. Northam’s key amendment has to do with returning a portion of new casino tax revenue to the state for public school construction.
