RICHMOND, Va. – More than 800 additional cases of the caronavirus were reported Tuesday by the Virginia Department of Health.
There are now 14,339 cases cases in the commonwealth, up from the 13,535 reported Monday.
The death toll also rose from 458 Monday to 492 on Tuesday. 2,165 people have been hospitalized and 82,753 people have been tested.
The VDH is not reporting the number of patients who have recovered from the novel virus.
Gov. Ralph Northam has said he wants the numbers to hold steady for 14 days before easing stay-at-home restrictions.
But Northam said Monday that he is open to the idea of reopening businesses in southwest Virginia before the rest of the state. He concedes that the situation in the border city of Bristol illustrates why a regional approach might be necessary.
Bristol is a city that straddles the Virginia-Tennessee border. While Tennessee has now allowed some businesses to reopen, businesses on the Virginia side remain shuttered.
Northam has questioned the fairness of keeping the Virginia side of Bristol closed.
