Tropical Storm Arthur will pass near North Carolina’s Outer Banks on Monday with rain and gusty winds, but the storm’s outer rainbands are already brushing the North Carolina coast.

Arthur is centered over 200 miles south-southwest of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and is moving to the north-northeast.

The tropical storm is forecast to gain some strength as it moves northeastward to a position near or just east of the Outer Banks on Monday. By Tuesday night or Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center forecasts Arthur to transition into a non-tropical low-pressure system well off the mid-Atlantic coast.

Tropical Storm Arthur crawled closer to the North Carolina coast on Sunday night, amid threats of some minor flooding and rough seas as the system moves off the Southeast seaboard.

Arthur formed Saturday in waters off Florida, marking the sixth straight year that a named storm has developed before the official June 1 start of the Atlantic hurricane season.
