(Pittsylvania County, VA) – Reports of shots fired were called in to the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s office around 4:30 Thursday afternoon.  As authorities responded it was reported that a woman had been killed.  Deputies encountered a man who refused to put down his firearm and was subsequently shot by law enforcement.

According to the Virginia State Police who was called in to investigate the officer involved shooting as per protocol the man was flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment.  As the scene cleared and officers were able to enter the home in the 8600 block of Mt. Cross Road safely, they found one female victim dead of an apparent gunshot wound.

Three children who had been inside the home were able to get out safely and retreat to a neighbor’s home before deputies arrived on scene.  Identities of the individuals have not been released and there is no word on the condition of the man airlifted from the scene.

The Virginia State police is investigation the murder as well as the officer-involved shooting.
