ROANOKE, Va. – A woman described as a “transient” was arrested in Roanoke Sunday after allegedly assaulting a police office.

According to police, the body of a baby was found in a shopping bag the woman had with her. The woman was later identified as Mandy Lavonne Lacy

The Roanoke County Police Department received a call for assistance from security at Tanglewood Mall about 3:20 Sunday afternoon after a woman began acting erratically.

On arrival, one police officer was assaulted by the woman and suffered a minor injury.

The baby’s body was discovered during the course of the investigation.

According to a press release, Roanoke County Police are now conducting a death investigation of a child.
