RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A regional jail in Virginia is on lockdown after approximately 70% of its inmates recently tested positive for COVID-19, officials said Wednesday.

James Willett, the superintendent of the Pamunkey Regional Jail, said there have been no deaths or hospitalizations as a result of the positive tests, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported. Willett said officials found out Monday that 124 of the 178 offenders tested were positive and 20 of the 129 staff members tested were positive for the virus.

Willett also said the “vast majority” of those who tested positive showed either mild symptoms or no symptoms.

The virus made its impact on the jail despite precautions instituted in March that included isolation areas for the newly arrested, screening, temperature checks, enhanced cleaning and the cancellation of all unnecessary visits and programs as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Willett said.

Willett and other officials said the first known cases were two staff members who tested positive on Aug. 20. Eight days later, a contractor tested positive and on Aug. 31 another employee had a positive test result.

The first positive result for an offender was confirmed on Sept. 3, an inmate who had been isolated with cold-like symptoms. Offenders in living areas near that offender were tested on Sept. 4 and Sept. 5 and all staff were tested on Sept. 5, Willett said.

All offenders testing positive have been notified, isolated from the rest of the jail population and are being treated as needed by jail medical staff. Officials also said employees who tested positive are on emergency paid leave.

The 549-inmate facility, which takes inmates from Hanover and Caroline counties, the town of Ashland and the U.S. Marshals Service, currently houses 380 offenders. It is approximately 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of Richmond.

Virginia health officials say more than 129,000 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the state and at least 2,697 people have died from the virus.
