DANVILLE, Va. – Two days after announcing the first positive case of COVID-19 at the Danville City Jail, Sheriff Mike Mondul confirms that 23 others are being treated for the novel virus.
On Wednesday, Mondul told the media that one inmate had a positive diagnosis. The patient was placed in quarantine and the jail physician reported that his fever had dropped.
On Friday, Mondul confirmed that 23 of out 25 inmates had tested positive for COVID-19 in three of the jail’s housing units.
“None of the inmates who have tested positive have significant symptoms at this point,” according to an email from the sheriff.
Sheriff Mondul said his medical staff has been in contact with local Health Department officials and “dependent upon the advice of the Health Department officials, the rest of the jail population and our staff may be tested for COVID-19.”
All inmates in the jail have been issued face masks, two additional electrostatic cleaners have been purchased, and the jail is using a cleaning solution known to kill the coronavirus.
