DANVILLE, Va. – There were no injuries but a Friday night fire damaged eight units at a complex on West Main Street.  Units were called to the Mayfield Apartments at 2946 West Main Street just after 8 p.m.

Heavy smoke and fire was visible from the roof and upper floor of the two-story building, which contains 24 apartments. All occupants were evacuated safely.

A ladder truck was set up and placed on the roof so that crews could prevent further spread. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control but two apartments suffered heavy damage. Six other apartments received smoke, heat, and water damage.

The occupants of eight apartments were displaced. Some are staying with family and friends while others are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Four engines, a ladder truck and support personnel were on the scene for five-and-a-half hours.

The fire marshal is investigating the cause.
