DANVILLE, Va. – A Caesar’s spokesman said Tuesday night his company was ecstatic by the overwhelming vote of approval for Danville’s casino resort.

City voters passed the referendum by a more than two-to-one margin. According to Tuesday night’s unofficial results, 13,022 ballots were cast in favor of a gaming establishment and 5,941 ballots cast against it.

According to Caesar’s spokesman Tony Rodio, the company expected the referendum to pass but was pleased by the wide margin. He said Caesar’s Entertainment is anxious to begin work on the $400 million project and hopes to have plans approved and begin construction during the second half of 2021. He said the timeline calls for completion during the second half of 2023.

Caesar’s has pledged to give the city of Danville $15 million within 30 days of the referendum’s passage. City Manager Ken Larking said that money will be spent wisely on one-time projects of greatest benefit to the citizens of Danville. Those include partial payment for a new police station in the former Dan River Executive Office building off Memorial Drive.

Mayor Alonzo Jones also pointed to educational needs and said a new school might be an option. Jones called the referendum’s passage a “team effort” involving local, state and Caesar’s officials. He also credited Danville Del. Danny Marshall for helping marshal the casino process through the General Assembly.
