PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. – A head-on collision on the Route 58 Bypass left one person dead and two others injured.

It happened about 11:10 Thursday night after Virginia State Police say a driver headed in the wrong direction crashed into another vehicle.

A 2008 Honda Civic was traveling south in the northbound lanes of the Route 58 Bypass near the Oakridge Farms Road when it struck head-on a northbound 2005 GMC Yukon.
The driver of the Honda, Joaquin B. Galvan, 51, of Bassett, Va., died at the scene. A female passenger in the Honda was transported to Sovah Health for treatment of serious injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle was also taken to the hospital and is in serious condition. The driver’s name was not available.

Authorities say they believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, which left the westbound lanes of the bypass blocked until after 2 a.m. Friday.

Emergency crews from Bachelors Hall and Brosville responded.

The Virginia State Police Salem Division Crash Reconstruction Team is assisting with the ongoing crash investigation.

Injuries were also reported in a second accident in the same area early Friday morning.

Elsewhere, Danville Police and EMS personnel were called to the 300 block of North Ridge Street for a well being check just before midnight and found one person dead in an apartment. There was no indication of foul play. Units were still on the scene at 4 a.m.
