WASHINGTON, D.C. – Both of Virginia’s U.S. senators are calling for President Donald Trump to be removed from office less than two weeks before his term is set to end.
Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, both Democrats, called for a thorough investigation into the violence Wednesday that left four people dead. Kaine said Vice President Mike Pence and members of the Cabinet should invoke the 25th Amendment and remove the President from office. And he said Congress should bar Trump from the inauguration.
Warner also blamed social media for airing Trump’s false claims after the riots.
Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam is also calling for Trump’s removal from office. In a tweet Thursday afternoon, the Democratic governor said: “I’ve now been working for over 24 hours to help Washington D.C. keep peace in the nation’s capital. In case it wasn’t already clear: the current President poses a danger to our country every minute he holds office. The sooner he is out, the better.”
His comments came as Trump’s Secretaries of Education and Transportation tendered their resignations, citing comments made by the president before and after the violent confrontations that left three people and a U.S. Capitol police officer dead.
