SALEM, Va. – Despite warning from Virginia State Police to stay off the roads, troopers responded to hundreds of calls during the height of Sunday’s winter storm.
Many of the calls involved accidents while others were to assist stranded motorists.
During a 14-hour period, troopers were on the scene of multiple crashes and hundreds of calls involving disabled or stuck vehicles. By 2 p.m. Sunday, state police had responded to 252 total crashes and 231 disabled vehicles across the commonwealth.
From 12 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, Virginia State Police had responded to 362 traffic crashes and 321 disabled/stuck vehicles. The majority of the traffic crashes have involved only damage to vehicles and few serious injuries.
While Danville didn’t get the snow and ice predicted by the National Weather Services, many other regions of the state weren’t so lucky. Roads in many areas remain snow and ice-covered. Others have black ice after melting snow refroze as the temperature fell overnight.
