DANVILLE, Va. – A 19-year-old has been charged with Wednesday’s murder on Cabell Street but police say they do not think he acted alone.

Police are searching for Avion Burton of Danville, who is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of 21-year-old Jaylan Fitzgerald. Burton remains at large and should be considered armed and dangerous.

Someone phoned 911 about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday Feb. 3 to report a man was lying on the pavement in the 600 block of Cabell Street, suffering from a gunshot wound. Fitzgerald died at the scene.

Danville Police say they received community support and quickly developed Burton as a suspect.

Police say Fitzgerald and Burton knew one another and that the shooting was not a random act. Neighbors say the boys grew up in the same neighborhood and would often play sports together.

Police do not believe Burton acted alone and the investigation is active.

The investigation led to a house in the 300 block of Bell Drive, where neighbors reported a heavy police presence. Authorities obtained a search warrant for the house and called the SWAT team to make entry. To ensure the safety of all those involved, police took an extended amount of time to knock and announce their presence and call the occupants out of the house before the SWAT team entered.
