(Danville, VA) – Three Students from George Washington High School’s football team signed letters of intent Wednesday afternoon.  Eagles Coach Nick Anderson spoke briefly about the team’s challenges having to deal with the football season being moved to the spring to due limitations amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.  Despite all of the adversity these young men along with all athletes throughout all sports worked within their limitations and continued to reach for their dream of continuing to play.  He said while bittersweet he is very proud of these young men and all they have accomplished.

The three student athletes at the ceremony and their future academic and athletic homes are as follows:

George Jackson – Hampden Sydney College

Jalen Strange – Virginia State University

Shakobe Hairston – AHOP Christian Leadership Academy

The students discussed plans to not only become a part of these schools athletics programs but also have set lofty goals for themselves.  Jackson plans to major in biology and potentially a move into veterinary medicine.  Strange is leaning towards the recreation field combined with physical education at least for the time being but left things open ended.  As for Hairston he is looking towards physical education and would love to be a coach, because football has been something ever since he was young he has been committed to.  He wants to give back and lead other young men on the field and says how similar his approach to those aspects mirror Coach Anderson who he credits with helping build a passion for coaching.

The GW Eagle football team finished an impressive 6-2 despite missing all of 2020 , little to no access to weight rooms, and moving activities to a shortened regular season and playoffs in the spring of this year.  The Eagles were eliminated in the 4D region finals in a hard fought game on the road against the Salem Spartans.  Coach Anderson also notched his 100th victory as Eagles Head Coach during the campaign.
