DANVILLE, Va. – One person trapped in a house fire Thursday morning was rescued by first responders and taken to the hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported.

Crews responded to a structure fire at 49 Fairfield Avenue with a person trapped inside shortly before 9:15 a.m. on Thursday.

A unit from the West Main Street Station was first to arrive and firefighters spotted flames coming from the front window.

A search and rescue operation was undertaken and an elderly man  was found and rescued from the home. The Danville Life Saving Crew transported the victim to the hospital. He was treated initially at Sovah Health in Danville and then transported to the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill. His condition was listed as “critical.”

The Danville Fire Department extinguished the fire “very quickly.” The one-story frame house sustained heavy fire damage.

The fire is being investigated by the Danville Fire Marshal’s office to determine the cause.
