DUBLIN, Va. – Volvo workers at a truck plant in Dublin, Virginia walked off the job Monday after rejecting a proposed contract a day earlier.

UAW members rejected a proposed contract on May 16. Then, on Sunday, the union turned down another tentative agreement the parties reached on May 20. The proposal covers about 2,900 members of UAW Local #2069 at the New River Valley plant.

The UAW International informed Volvo that members would leave their work stations at noon Monday “in an orderly manner after performing any tasks necessary to prevent damage to the company’s equipment or product.”

The tone of the letter signed by Ray Curry, secretary-treasurer of the union and director of its Heavy Truck Department, contrasted with rank-and-file anger over the protracted talks that began in February and led to a 13-day strike that union leaders called off April 30. Based on comments on social media, Local 2069 members appear to be as angry with their union negotiators as they are with the contract offers.

Local UAW members voted 91% against salary language and 90% against hourly and common language in the proposed six-year agreement.

Contract talks are expected to resume on Wednesday.
