PROVIDENCE, N.C. – A woods fire fueled by tinder dry conditions and whipped by high winds kept volunteer firefighters busy in Providence Thursday.

Three engines, a tanker truck, a brush truck and a service truck responded to an area near the bridge after it was determined that the woods fire was spreading rapidly.

Eight acres on the Walters Mill Road were blackened before crews brought the flames under control. There were no injuries and no homes were damaged.

Firefighters were assisted by members of the North Carolina Forest Service, who were  able to plow a fire line around the flames, securing the area from further spread.
Investigators determined that the fire started when a tree fell across a power line and snapped the charged line.
The N.C. Department of Transportation assisted, along with the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office and Duke Energy.
