SALEM, Va. — A boy under the age of 16 faces felony charges after police say he shot two people who were attending the opening night of the Salem Fair, leaving one with serious injuries.
Officers with the Salem Police Department were patrolling at the fair when they heard gunshots around 9 p.m. on Wednesday before they saw someone with a gun who they captured after a brief chase.
Fairgoers were already clearing out of the midway because of an approaching thunderstorm when the melee started, sending patrons fleeing for safety.
According to police, one of the victims was also a juvenile, while the second victim was a man. His name was not disclosed. His condition was unavailable on Thursday.
The suspect, whose identity hasn’t been released except to say the boy is younger than 16, is being held at the Roanoke Detention Center on multiple charges, including two counts of malicious wounding. His status was unavailable and no motive has been given.
The Salem Fair posted on Facebook that it remains open for business under regularly scheduled hours. New safety measures to be implemented will subject patrons to bag checks at gate entry, and children younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
