DANVILLE, Va. – Heavy rainfall is expected Danville Thursday as remnants of Tropical storm Elsa move through Southside Virginia.
With up to 2 inches of rain possible, the National Weather Service has placed Danville and Pittsylvania County under a flash flood watch until 10 pm Thursday.
The remnants of Elsa could bring periods of moderate to heavy rainfall in the Piedmont area Thursday. That could result in flooding in low lying areas near creeks, streams and rivers, as well as locations with poor drainage.
While the Dan River remains low because of the lack of recent rainfall, the NWS cautions that heavy downpours could result in road closures due to rising water. Winds gusts in excess of 20 mph are also possible in this storm. Motorists are advised to avoid any pooling water, downed trees or power lines in this storm.
In addition to Danville and Pittsylvania County, the Flash Flood Watch area includes Halifax and Charlotte Counties in south central Virginia, and Caswell and Rockingham Counties in north central North Carolina.
