HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. – A weekend fire destroyed a garage full of antique and collectible cars in Halifax County, Virginia, and investigators put the loss at around $800,000.
A lightning strike sparked the blaze, which destroyed the garage and its contents on the Newton Farm Road.
Raymond Butler tells the Gazette-Virginian that the family’s 50-year collection of antique automobiles, bicycles and golf carts was consumed by fire after lightning struck the center of the shop. The flames spread rapidly, leaving no time to salvage anything from the garage.
The Cluster Springs Volunteer Fire Department arrived at 11:30 Saturday night with three trucks and remained on the scene until 5 a.m. Sunday. The fire chief said heavy flames and smoke were showing when the first firefighters arrived.
There were no injuries.
