DANVILLE, Va. – Tropical Storm Fred made landfall on the Florida Panhandle Monday afternoon. The storm came ashore around 3:30 pm near Cape San Blas, Florida with winds estimated around 65 mph.
Now, Fred is moving inland and starting to lose strength. It will continue to head inland over Florida, then Georgia, and then track up the Appalachian Mountains where it will spread flooding rainfall.
The National Weather Service says the storm could bring drenching rains to the Danville area tonight and tomorrow, with localized flash flooding possible. No watches have been issued for Southside, with Danville expected to get 1-2 inches of rain.
The heaviest, widespread rain and severe storm risk will likely be from late Tuesday night, from 10 PM until noon on Wednesday.
Flash Flood Watches are in effect for seven Virginia counties, including Patrick, Floyd and Carroll.
