MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. – A police pursuit along I-81 ended Monday afternoon after the driver apparently took his own life.

A police pursuit along I-81 ended Monday afternoon after the driver apparently took his own life.

According to Virginia State Police, the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office was pursuing a 28-year-old man from Abbottstown, Penn. He was wanted by Pennsylvania authorities and believed to be “armed and dangerous.”

Troopers joined the pursuit, which continued through Roanoke County and into Montgomery County. The chase ended near the 119 mile marker. As officers approached the car, the driver fired a revolver. The man died of the self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene, according to state police.

None of the troopers fired their weapons and no other vehicles were involved.

The man’s body has been taken to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Roanoke for autopsy and positive identification.
