DANVILLE, Va. – An arrest has been made in a drive-by shooting at a Danville shopping center.
22-year-old Jimel Deshawn Southern was located at a home on Arnett Blvd. about 1 a.m. Thursday and taken into custody.
Danville Police say Southern is the man who opened fire in the parking lot of Nordan Shopping Center, shattering a glass storefront and hitting a car.
Police were called to 211 Nordan Drive at around 4:30 Wednesday afternoon after receiving calls of shots fired at the shopping center. They arrived to find a vehicle that had been struck by gunfire while the driver was fleeing the scene. One business was hit by a single gunshot; however, investigators say the car was the intended target. No one was injured.
Southern was quickly identified as the shooter and was taken into custody early Thursday morning without further incident. Southern is charged with two counts of attempted malicious wounding, two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and a single count of shooting into an occupied vehicle. He was placed in the Danville City Jail, where he is being held without bond.
Police say the gunman knew the intended victims and that this was not a random act.
At least one business was evacuated, with employees fleeing out the back door.
