DANVILLE, Va. – Tyson Foods, Inc. will spend $300 million dollars and create 376 jobs at its new operation in Cane Creek Centre in Danville.
Average annual salaries for the positions will be around $40,000 to $45,000. Tyson plans to break ground on the project no later than November, with the plant scheduled to be up and running in early or mid-2023.
Governor Ralph Northam said Virginia beat out North Carolina for the project, which will be located in a 325,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility here. Cane Creek Centre is an industrial park jointly owned by the City of Danville and Pittsylvania County.
The company has committed to purchase 60 million pounds of Virginia-grown chicken over the next three years.
The new facility will be used primarily for the production of premium quality, fully cooked Tyson brand, including Any’tizer® Snacks and Chicken Nuggets. The company is headquartered in Springdale, Arkansas and is known for brands like Tyson, Jimmy Dean, Hillshire Farm, Ball Park, Wright, Aidells, ibp and State Fair.
Northam approved a $3 million grant from the Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund and a $3 million performance-based grant from the Virginia Investment Performance Grant, an incentive that encourages continued capital investment by existing Virginia companies, to assist Danville-Pittsylvania County with the project. The Governor also approved a $500,000 grant from the Governor’s Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development Fund that supports projects sourcing Virginia-grown products.
The Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission approved $1.5 million from the Tobacco Region Opportunity Fund for the project.
Tyson is eligible to receive state benefits from the Major Business Facility Job Tax Credit for new, full-time jobs created through the facility.
Danville Del. Danny Marshall said Tyson will be a welcome addition to the local economy, adding that “one of the best parts for our community is how well Tyson treats its employees. Tyson will be a great fit.”
