With the election just one week away, a new poll shows Republican Glenn Youngkin and Democrat Terry McAuliffe tied in the race to be Virginia’s next governor.
The survey by Emerson College and Nexstar Media canvassed 875 voters. The results show both candidates at 49%, with McAuliffe’s support among likely Virginia voters remaining virtually unchanged from the poll’s Sept. 13-22 data.
Youngkin’s support is up from 45% of voters polled by Emerson / Nexstar in mid-September. The latest results released Monday surveyed likely Virginia voters over the Oct. 22-23 weekend.
The numbers come as McAuliffes’s campaign brings Democratic heavyweights to the state to make a last-minute pitch to get out the vote.
Youngkin has proved to be an effective campaigner and is largely going it alone as he tours the state by bus, underscoring his message of lowering taxes and giving parents a say in what their children are taught in public schools.
Voters overall polled in the Emerson/Nexstar survey said education is the most important issue facing Virginia (21%), as the Republican candidate focuses on culture wars found within Loudoun County’s school board and across the commonwealth.
Compared to similar polls conducted in the last two months, support for Youngkin has grown whereas McAuliffe’s support has waned ahead of the Nov. 2 election.
