HENRY COUNTY, Va. – Three students and their driver were injured Monday afternoon when a Martinsville school bus collided with a Dodge Ram pickup, broke through a guardrail and then plunged down an embankment.
The wreck happened just before 4 p.m. in the 5000 block of Appalachian Drive on Route 57 in Henry County. 12 students and the driver were on board Henry County Schools’ Bus 86 at the time of the collision.
The bus left the road, crashed through the guardrail and went down an embankment between two trees before coming to rest near the railroad tracks below.
Virginia State Police said three students and the school bus driver were treated for non-life threatening injuries. The students on the bus were from Bassett High School and Fieldale Collinsville Middle School.
The pickup truck was totaled and had extensive damage to the driver’s side front door and quarter panel. The impact knocked the front wheel from the pickup.
The roadway near the crash was closed Monday afternoon as the Virginia State Police Crash Investigation Team worked the scene.
