BIG STONE GAP, Va. – An escort honoring a fallen Virginia police officer will be held Monday.

Big Stone Gap Officer Michael Chandler was shot and killed in the line of duty on Saturday. Virginia State Police say Chandler was called to a home around 4 a.m. Saturday to conduct a welfare check when he came into contact with at least one person and was shot. He died later that evening.

On Monday, first responders including law enforcement, fire and EMS will escort Chandler’s body back from the Roanoke Medical Examiner’s Office to his home and family in Big Stone Gap. The escort will be led by Wise County Deputy Sheriff Natasha Smith Chandler, who is bringing her husband home.

The procession is expected to begin at noon.
