DANVILLE, Va. – Danville Police have arrested the man they say struck and killed a pedestrian Saturday night and then left the scene of the accident.
44-year-old Willie Junior Coles was taken into custody Sunday and is charged with felony hit and run — driving a vehicle involved in a fatal accident and then failing to stop — and with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Investigators say Coles was driving the vehicle that struck and killed a 74-year-old pedestrian at West Main and Lady Astor Street. The accident happened about 9:30 Saturday night and the victim was pronounced dead a short time later at Sovah Health Medical Center.
The vehicle involved in the accident was recovered Sunday after Danville Police received a tip from a private citizen.
Coles was arrested and is being held in the Danville City Jail under no bond.
The victim has been identified but Danville Police continue to withhold his name pending notification of next-of-kin.
