BIG STONE GAP, Va. — An inmate at a Virginia prison died Saturday after another prisoner apparently attacked him in a cell.

The Virginia Department of Corrections has identified the inmate who was killed inside Wallens Ridge State Prison in Big Stone Gap as 47-year-old Gregory Pierce.

According to the department, Pierce died after another inmate reportedly attacked him inside of a cell at the prison on Saturday.

The Virginia Department of Corrections said in a news release that Pierce was pronounced dead at Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap.

Pierce serving multiple life sentences for sex crimes, including rape, the news release says.

The inmate suspected of killing him is serving a life sentence for murder, according to the corrections department.

No charges were immediately reported. The incident remains under investigation.
