DANVILLE, Va. — Danville received a mixed bag of precipitation Monday, starting as rain before transitioning to sleet and then a heavy, wet snow around 8 a.m.
Several inches fell over the city before the snow slowly exited the city around noon. Rising temperatures took care of most of the snow on roadways but Danville Public Works warns that black ice will be a problem tonight as the temperature rises and the slush refreezes.
At the height of the storm, 6,000 Danville Utilities customers were without power. High winds felled trees and power lines and outages were scattered throughout the service area. Local crews are being assisted by linemen from Wilson, N.C. as the city works to restore power to all customers.
The Danville Police Department was called to seven weather-related accidents before noon. One vehicle accident on U.S 58 West near the city limits resulted in an injury.
While much of the snow had melted by late afternoon, snowplows will be working around-the-clock to clear residential streets that remain snow-covered.
Motorists are advised to stay off the roads tonight as the temperature drops and melting snow refreezes.
Snowfall forced the closure of the Danville Airport Monday morning but the runways were cleared and the airport reopened later in the day.
Elsewhere, the regions around/north of Staunton, Charlottesville and Fredericksburg continue to deal with treacherous road conditions.
