DANVILLE, Va. – The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for much of the state — including Danville and Pittsylvania County — through noon Monday.

While the storm started as a rain event locally, snow began falling in Danville about 8 a.m. The snowfall is steady with winds of 15-to-20 miles per hour. The temperature reached a high of 48 about 3:00 this morning and has been slowly falling to the 30s.

Sleet is reported near Tunstall High School with snow sticking off 41 in Shadowood.

Halifax County Schools are closed today. Henry County schools are also closed. Danville Community College will have a virtual learning day because of the inclement weather. However, Averett University will still operate on a normal schedule today. Check our home page for a complete listing of cancellations and delayed openings.

High winds left many without power, especially in areas just outside the city. Outages were reported in Ringgold, Blairs, Cascade on the Spring Garden Road in Chatham and on White Oak Mountain. The winds knocked a tree into a house on Shamrock Drive in Danville but there were no injuries and no damage.

Virginia State Police are warning motorists to stay off the roads in areas receiving significant snowfall.

The National Weather Service is calling for accumulations of snow as well as combinations of rain and sleet in the early morning hours of Monday morning. State police are urging motorists to delay travel to give crews an opportunity to treat and clear the roadways.

State police  have all available troopers on patrol in order to respond as quickly as possible to traffic crashes, emergencies and disabled motorists.
