DANVILLE, Va. – While much of the snow melted Monday afternoon, refreezing along roads, bridges and overpasses left patchy areas of black ice on some streets overnight. And with the temperature expected to remain well below freezing until noon, driving is dicey.

Virginia State Police emergency communications centers across the state have responded to more than 2,600 calls for assistance since midnight Monday. Troopers were still on the scene of more than 50 accidents as of 8:30 p.m. The majority of the crashes involve damage to vehicles. There have been few injuries and no reported traffic deaths.

In Danville, police responded to eight weather-related accidents Monday. Only one was a major crash involving injuries.

At the height of the storm, 6,000 Danville Utilities customers were without power. That number had been reduced to 2,000 by late afternoon and crews worked throughout the night to restore service. They were assisted by linemen from Wilson, N.C. That work continues Tuesday morning.

The Public Works Department’s snowplow crews also worked throughout the night to clear residential streets of any remaining snow.
