DANVILLE, Va. – Danville got no snow in the latest storm to hit Virginia. Southwest and Central Virginia received a dusting Thursday night, but nothing like the snowstorm that left up to a foot of snow in some areas of the state on Monday. A number of counties along the Virginia-West Virginia border reported measurable snowfall.
Schools in our area were taking no chances; students in Danville Public Schools and at Danville Community College will not be on campus Friday but will attend class virtually.
Virginia State Police and the Virginia Department of Transportation are encouraging motorists to plan ahead, and to avoid traveling along snow-covered roads.
Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam pushed back against a local reporter who continued to question his response to Monday’s I-95 gridlock that left hundreds of motorists stranded for up to 27 hours in a major snowstorm. Northam, a Democrat who leaves office later this month, said in an uncharacteristically combative interview Thursday that he was “getting sick and tired of people talking about what went wrong.”
And he questioned whether motorists shouldn’t be held responsible. “Do you think maybe you should’ve stayed home or wherever you were rather than getting out on I-95?,” said Northam Thursday.
Gov. Northam attempted to walk back those comments later in the day, telling another reporter that “We certainly don’t want to blame the drivers. Again, I feel sorry for the folks who were stuck on the highway for hours.”
Though no injuries or deaths were reported from the interstate gridlock, several people have attacked the governor and the Virginia Department of Transportation for not responding promptly and failing to prepare the roads properly.
