(Danville, VA) – The National Weather Service upgraded the greater Danville area to a winter storm warning that will remain in effect through Monday morning.  Along with the issuing of the warning projections of what and how much precipitation the area will receive has changed.

A wintry mixture of snow and sleet will be expected as folks wake up Sunday morning, then transitioning to all sleet until mid afternoon as highs are now expected to rise above freezing to 34 degrees.  From that point on into the evening hours precipitation is projected to turn to freezing rain.  Ice accumulation of one tenth up to three tenths of an inch is possible.  Adding to that will be gusty winds of up to 30 miles per hour.

As we move from Sunday evening into Monday the freezing rain will mix back in with sleet and snow until just before midnight at which point its expected to return to all snow before the storm system moves out of the region.  Overnight lows will be around 28.  Another tenth of an inch of ice as well as snow and sleet of 1 to 2 inches are possible before all is said and done.

Danville Public Works crews began pretreating major roads, bridges and overpasses  on Thursday in anticipation of the storm.

City trucks are mounted with snowplows. When the storm arrives, crews will begin working 12-hour, round-the-clock shifts. Crews begin plowing major thoroughfares when an inch of snow accumulates on street surfaces.

Danville Utilities linemen as well as tree removal teams are on stand-by and will respond as needed throughout the storm.  A mutual aid deployment of nearly thirty electrical crew members from Jacksonville, Florida departed Sunday morning heading for Danville to aid the storm response.
