BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech will no longer require that students be vaccinated for COVID-19 to attend classes on the Blacksburg campus. The reversal in school policy is effective immediately.

The decision came just three days after Virginia’s new attorney general, Jason Miyares, issued an opinion stating that State colleges and universities in Virginia cannot require students to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Miyares found that because the state legislature has not passed legislation specifically mandating coronavirus vaccines for students, the colleges and universities don’t have the authority to require them.

While the change in policy lifts the vaccine mandate, federal regulations may still require students who work in specific settings at Virginia Tech to be vaccinated.

The Blacksburg university will discontinue mandatory testing for students but will continue to provide voluntary testing.
