WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – More than 6,000 residents within a one-mile radius of a Winston-Salem fertilizer plant have been urged to evacuate as flames continued to rise from the rubble Tuesday morning.
The fire was reported before 7 p.m. at the Weaver Fertilizer Plant in the 4400 block of Cherry Street.
Video posted by the City of Winston-Salem showed towering flames and heavy smoke, and people living within a one-mile radius of the plant were asked to evacuate after the fire reached a rail car holding explosive chemicals.
The evacuation area around 4440 North Cherry Street includes 6,500 residents or nearly 2,500 households. The fire was still burning more than 9 hours after it was reported just before 7 p.m. Monday.
No injuries have been reported from the fire.
