HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. – Two students have been arrested, charged with bringing firearms on the campus of Halifax County High School.
The Gazette-Virginian reports that both students were found to be in possession of pistols after Halifax County High School was put on lockdown Thursday morning.
18-year-old Savion Jamar Howard of Nathalie was taken into custody and faces a felony charge of possession of a weapon on school property. Howard was taken to the Blue Ridge Regional Jail in Halifax and booked on a firearm possession charge. He is being held at the jail without bond awaiting trial.
A 17-year-old male juvenile was also taken into custody. He has also been charged with possession of a firearm on school property and has been taken to W.W. Moore Juvenile Detention Center in Danville.
The firearms were found during a three-hour lockdown at the school. No firearms were discharged and no one was injured during the incident.
According to Principal Michael Lewis, school officials were told that one of the teens may have been in possession of an illegal substance.
At around 11 a.m., school officials were made aware that a male student might be carrying a gun. Upon investigation, a firearm was found in the student’s backpack. Further investigation resulted in the discovery of a second student in possession of a firearm.
Virginia State Police, South Boston police and deputies with the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the call. Dogs trained to detect firearms and explosives were seen with handlers in the student parking lot.
The lockdown was lifted just before 2 p.m.
